Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea want RB Leipzig’s talent spotter Paul Mitchell as new sporting director

Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea are locked in a three-way battle to land RB Leipzig’s talent spotter Paul Mitchell as their new sporting director, according to reports.

The former Tottenham and Southampton head of recruitment has been targeted by all three top flight clubs after impressing in his role at Leipzig.

However, Sky Sports News claims the Premier League trio could be forced to look elsewhere, if the 38-year-old chooses to sign a lucrative new deal, which could keep him at Leipzig until 2025.

Mitchell moved to Germany from Spurs in 2017 to become the Bundesliga club’s head of recruitment and development, but RB Leipzig are keen to tie the talent spotter down to a new long-term deal that would see him become their head of global football.

It is believed that the promotion would be likely to lead to Mitchell taking over the managerial reigns at Leipzig at the end of that new contract.

But United remain keen to tempt Manchester-born Mitchell back to his home city to become their first technical director.

Arsenal have also earmarked Mitchell as their preferred replacement for Sven Mislintat, who left his role as the Gunners’ head of the recruitment earlier this season.

Mislintat, 46, has recently been confirmed as Stuttgart’s sporting director.

Chelsea too are keen to bring Mitchell back to London, as they continue their search for a replacement for Michael Emenalo, who quit his role at Stamford Bridge 18 months ago.

Fulham will spend next season in the Championship

Teams that get relegated are usually deserving of being demoted to the second-tier, but that is not always the case for certain players, who have either given their all to the cause or are simply better than playing a level below.

Huddersfield and Fulham have both endured abject seasons and their descent has been confirmed in the last few days.

Here, talkSPORT.com takes a look at the 10 best players who could get moves this summer.

Terence Kongolo – Huddersfield

The former Feyenord and Monaco defender has been one of the club’s most consistent performers despite their difficult campaign.

The Dutch international cost the Terriers a club-record £17.5million and has been linked with a move to Fenerbahce.

Kongolo is a target for Fenerbache

10

Andre Schurrle – Fulham

Back in February, the German international denied claims he would leave the club if they went down, but two months on and his mindset could very well be a different one.

He signed a two-year loan deal away from Borussia Dortmund but the ex-Chelsea attacker is better than the Championship and could even be sent back early by the Cottagers.

Andre Schurrle could move abroad

Aaron Mooy – Huddersfield

In his two seasons in the Premier League, Mooy has shown he is capable of cutting it in the top-flight and the rumours have already started to circulate as to where the Australian could end up next.

Newcastle and West Ham are both reportedly interested in the midfielder who, while quieter this campaign, is able to be a game-changer.

Mooy has shown he can play in the Premier League

Ryan Sessegnon – Fulham

Tottenham are long-term admirers of the 18-year-old and could very well come back for him this summer. It has been something of a reality check season for Sessegnon, who had a fantastic 2017/18 season to get Fulham promoted, but has found life in the Premier League more challenging.

Sessegnon is wanted by Spurs

Karlan Grant  – Huddersfield

While he may have only joined the club back in January, the former Charlton forward has already netted three times in just seven appearances and looks to have adapted well to life in the Premier League.

His brace against West Ham was impressive and Huddersfield would be better off had Grant arrived earlier in the season.

Grant has settled quickly in the top-flight

10

Aleksandar Mitrovic – Fulham

Two relegations with two different clubs, Mitrovic, understandably, may not want another season of Championship football.

His 10 goals in the Premier League is not a bad return considering he is playing in such a poor side and the Serbian  is being considered by Liverpool, who see him as cover, while Everton want an upgrade on Cenk Tosun.

10

Mitrovic has scored 10 times this season

Calum Chambers – Fulham

The on-loan Arsenal man has thrived this season as a defensive midfielder and looks a class above some of the players around him.

Signed a new long-term deal with the Gunners last year and is set to head back to the Emirates but could have done well enough to grab a transfer to another top-flight side.

Chambers is likely to return to Arsenal

10

Ryan Babel – Fulham

Signed a short term deal with the club and has looked sharp in spells, but it has not been enough.

The Dutchman scored on Tuesday night against Watford in the 4-1 defeat and it is certain he will be at another club in the summer with Championship football not on his radar.

Former Liverpool winger Ryan Babel joined Fulham on a short-term deal

Alfie Mawson – Fulham

It has been an injury hit season for the former Swansea defender, who is a very capable operator at the back on his day and showed this in the last couple of years.

This is his second relegation in as many campaigns and while he could very well remain at the club, there is every chance Mawson could move on this summer.

Tottenham defender Danny Rose hits back at Ruud Gullit: ‘He was bang out of order, we shut him up’

Danny Rose hopes Ruud Gullit will ‘eat his words’ after Tottenham’s miraculous comeback victory over Ajax in their Champions League semi-final.

The Dutch pundit questioned the ability of several Spurs stars, including Rose, following their 1-0 defeat in last week’s first leg.

Danny Rose hit back at Ruud Gullit after Spurs booked their place in the Champions League final

Danny Rose hit back at Ruud Gullit after Spurs booked their place in the Champions League final

“A lot of players were disappointing because I see them every week in the Premier League,” Gullit told beIN SPORTS following Tottenham’s defeat in London.

“Dele Alli, oh my god, technically wise so bad. Wanyama, my god, technically wise, Rose too.

“Like I said I see them every week and how is it possible to make so many mistakes?

“I know you’re under pressure but you need to know what to do and they didn’t.”

Tottenham endured another nightmarish first-half in Amsterdam, with Matthijs de Ligt and Hakim Ziyech firing Ajax into a 3-0 aggregate lead, but Lucas Moura’s second-half hat-trick sent Spurs through to the final against all the odds.

And Rose, who was one of Tottenham’s standout performers on the night, was delighted to provide the perfect response to his critics.

“Seeing people’s comments like Ruud Gullit after the first game, and how rude he was, it’s nice that we fought back tonight and hopefully shut him up,” he told Sky Sports.

“He was very critical of individual players, saying how bad we were technically, and he’s bang out of order for that.

“So that was fuel to the fire and I hope he eats his words after tonight.”

Adam Johnson: Former England international released from prison after serving three years for child sex offences

Former England footballer Adam Johnson is understood to have been released from prison after serving half his sentence for child sex offences.

The former Sunderland and Manchester City winger was sentenced to six years in 2016 for engaging in sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl.

Johnson is released exactly halfway through his six-year sentence

1

Johnson is released exactly halfway through his six-year sentence

Witnesses said Johnson’s father, Dave Johnson, was seen driving a Mercedes people carrier with blacked-out rear windows out of HMP Moorland, near Doncaster, South Yorkshire, in the early hours of Friday morning.

The vehicle was followed out of the prison complex by a police van.

The same car was later spotted arriving at Johnson’s mansion in Castle Eden, County Durham.

Friday’s release comes exactly halfway through the player’s six-year sentence.

Johnson admitted kissing the girl but denied her claim that he touched her inside her pants and that she then performed oral sex on him.

A jury found him guilty of sexual activity with a child in relation to “digital penetration” but cleared him of the same offence relating to the oral sex.

He had already admitted another charge of sexual activity with a child in relation to kissing and also of grooming the girl.

  • Adam Johnson should NOT be allowed to return to football after prison release, says Labour MP

The judge said Johnson had lied repeatedly, referring to the controversy over whether he delayed his guilty pleas to enable him to continue his £60,000-a-week career with Sunderland.

As a sex offender, Johnson will have to register his address and bank details with police and inform officers of any intention to travel abroad.

The children’s services department from the local council may also carry out risk assessments in relation to Johnson’s daughter Ayla, and could prevent Johnson from spending time alone with his daughter.

Sissoko was once again imperious for Spurs against Man City

Spurs claimed a superb victory over Pep Guardiola’s men in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie thanks to a late strike from Heung-min Son.

Sissoko dominated the midfield throughout the match, and former Blues striker Cascarino believes the Frenchman is unaware of the threat he poses to other teams.

“I’m not sure whether Moussa Sissoko realises how much danger he creates for opponents by taking on his marker,” Cascarino wrote in The Times.

“The Tottenham midfielder opened up play brilliantly by beating the likes of Fernandinho and Ilkay Gundogan last night and it is something he should be doing more often.

“Once he gets past a player there is no way he is going to be stopped.

“On many of the occasions that Tottenham threatened the Manchester City goal last night it followed Sissoko beating an opponent in the centre of the pitch.

“That causes opposing defenders to leave their station to cover, creating space for other Tottenham players.”

Cascarino has also claimed Harry Kane will face lengthy spells out injured every season unless he alters the way he challenges opposition players.

Kane, the England captain, could be out for the remainder of 2018/19 having sustained another ankle injury during Tuesday’s match.

And Cascarino says the forward must partly blame himself for the injury.

He added: “It’s fine for a striker to move across to the flanks to block clearances by full backs – it was one of my responsibilities throughout my career, after all – but Kane should not be lunging in while doing that.

“He should just be covering and standing up rather than jumping in.

“He has a history of ankle problems and if he continues to make challenges like that he will be suffering a couple of long injury absences each season.”

Tottenham will beat Liverpool to lift Champions League title, says ‘convinced’ Spurs legend Graham Roberts

Tottenham legend Graham Roberts believes the club’s ‘name is written’ on the Champions League trophy this season.

The UEFA Cup winner has branded manager Mauricio Pochettino ‘a genius’ and is confident Spurs will beat Liverpool in Madrid on June 1.

The Premier League clubs both beat overwhelming odds to book their final places, in two of the most dramatic semi-final clashes in European history.

Hat-trick hero Lucas Moura celebrates as Spurs progress to their first ever Champions League final

But Spurs’ stunning away goals victory over Ajax capped a remarkable journey, which has seen them battle back from the brink of elimination on more than one occasion.

Pochettino’s men almost didn’t qualify from their group, but have now seen off Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City and Ajax en route to their first ever Champions League final.

And the Spurs hero believes the north London club are destined to lift the trophy this season, as he told talkSPORT ahead of their remarkable second-leg against Manchester City last month.

“I told you last time, everybody wrote us off after three games but then we beat PSV and Inter Milan and went to Barcelona and outplayed them,” Roberts told Jim White on Thursday.

“Everybody was writing us off, saying we’re lucky to get through, then we play Borussia Dortmund, top of the league in Germany, and we gave them a thrashing 4-0.

“Then we get drawn against Man City and people said we’re out now, we’ve got no chance, and we done them over two legs.

“And now we’ve done Ajax.

“I said from the day we beat Dortmund that we’ll win this cup.

“It’s going to be a great final between two English teams and you have to go there and play, but these players want to win this trophy for this manager, the supporters and the club.

“Our name is written on it.”

Roberts admitted Wednesday’s ‘special’ win over Ajax may just rival lifting the UEFA Cup in a Spurs shirt back in the 80s.

The White Hart Lane great hailed the team’s performance but reserved special praise for Pochettino.

He said the against-all-odds victory is the latest proof of the Argentine’s footballing genius, and believes he could become one of the club’s all-time greatest managers.

“Winning the UEFA Cup will always be the greatest night of my life, but last night was just special, it was very, very special,” he added.

“Luca Moura will go down in history. Three goals in 35 minutes, that takes some doing, especially in a Champions League semi-final away from home.

“And Pochettino, the man is a genius.

“I’ve met him many, many times and he loves Tottenham Hotspur, he’s very passionate and it all came out last night. I’ve got so much joy for him.

“We’ve had so many problems this year; we didn’t go back into the stadium until late, he never bought a player but he believed in this team, and we’ve had over 50 injuries to 28 different players, so what he’s had to go through is just amazing.

“I’ve got nothing but admiration for him and he’ll become one of the best managers Tottenham have ever had, I’m sure.”
