Solskjaer seeks immediate rebound

LONDON ̢ۢ Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will look for a response from his Manchester United players after the first domestic loss of his reign when they face Wolves in the FA Cup quarter-finals today.
He tasted defeat for the first time in English football as his side went down 2-0 at Arsenal in the Premier League last weekend, but such has been the reservoir of goodwill built up that it is a matter of when, and not if, he lands the job on a full-time basis.
Some media reports have suggested that Solskjaer could be confirmed as manager during the forthcoming international break, which follows the Wolves tie.
While United officials have offered no guidance on whether the appointment is imminent, it is understood the club and Norwegian outfit Molde have put in place a compensation package should he take on the role for good, with a reported £500,000 (S$897,320) fee agreed.
If the Red Devils can navigate their way past Wolves, not only will the clamour for Solskjaer to put pen to paper reach fever pitch, but they will also have "a real chance" of lifting their 13th FA Cup at Wembley in May.
Sergio Romero, who is the designated Cup goalkeeper, told the club website the team were ready to go on another streak - United were on a club-record nine-game away winning run before the Arsenal game - at Molineux.

WE'RE UP FOR IT
We're really excited about the game ahead of us, it's a really important game against a team that have done really well this season. So it's a big challenge, but we're prepared and confident.
SERGIO ROMERO, United's designated Cup custodian, on the away clash at Wolves, who are riding high in seventh spot after promotion to the top flight.

The Argentina No. 1 said: "We know it's another difficult trip down to Wolves, but we're confident and we know this trophy is very important for us.
"We want to be involved in the very last day that this competition is taking place and give ourselves the chance to lift a trophy, and make everyone at the club and of course our fans very happy.
"We're really excited about the game ahead of us, it's a really important game against a team that have done really well this season. So it's a big challenge, but we're prepared and confident."
Brazil midfielder Fred, who could also feature against Nuno Espirito Santo's men, agreed with his teammate, insisting that United would be "going for the win".
He added: "They're a great team with very good players. But we're well aware that it won't be easy, so we're ready for it."
Solskjaer will be expected to rotate his squad as full-back Ashley Young is suspended, but the injury list is clearing up with Ander Herrera, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard all in contention to play a part.

But, whichever team he puts out, the 46-year-old knows Wolves are a significant obstacle to United's hopes of silverware, having already claimed the scalps of Chelsea and Liverpool, while holding Manchester City to a draw at home this term.
With the newly promoted side sitting in a lofty seventh position in the league, Morocco midfielder Romain Saiss also feels his side can "do something great on Saturday" as they seek a first appearance in the Cup's semi-finals for the first time in 21 years.

Aberdeen 0-3 Celtic: Hoops wrap up eighth successive Scottish Premiership title with routine win

Celtic have confirmed their status as Scottish Premiership champions for an eighth season in a row with a 3-0 triumph at Aberdeen.

Mikael Lustig scored with a diving header five minutes from half-time before James Wilson missed two glorious chances for the Dons.

Parkhead defender Jozo Simunovic headed in the second from a Callum McGregor corner in the 52nd minute before French striker Odsonne Edouard fired in a late third to wrap up the championship with two fixtures remaining.

The win took Celtic 12 points ahead of Rangers who cannot catch them in their last three games.

The champions face Hearts in the William Hill Scottish Cup final at Hampden Park on May 25 where victory will hand them an unprecedented domestic triple treble and with momentum behind them, who outside Tynecastle would bet against it?

Interim boss Neil Lennon’s side travelled north knowing a point would suffice and he reinstated left-back Kieran Tierney, who will have an operation on a double hernia at the end of the season, and attacker Timothy Weah with Emilio Izaguirre out altogether and Scott Sinclair on the bench.

The Dons were without suspended defender Andrew Considine as well as injured captain Graeme Shinnie, Gary Mackay-Steven, Connor McLellan and Niall McGinn but right-back Shay Logan returned after being injured out since February 10.

Before the game there was a minute’s applause in tribute to former Celtic captain and manager Billy McNeill and fellow Lisbon Lion Stevie Chalmers who died recently, the former also an ex-Aberdeen boss.

Dons keeper Joe Lewis saved an early header from Celtic midfielder Tom Rogic but in the 18th minute the home side should have taken the lead when Greg Stewart teed up Wilson with a cross but from 10 yards the striker, on loan from Manchester United, volleyed into the ground and the ball clipped the bar on the way over.

A long ball from Hoops defender Kristoffer Ajer found Edouard racing through on goal chased by Logan but Lewis blocked the shot.

At the other end, after a remarkable lung-bursting run and cross from Aberdeen skipper Scott McKenna, Celtic keeper Scott Bain blocked Sam Cosgrove’s shot before Wilson hit the outside of the post with the rebound with the goal gaping.

However, in the 40th minute when Stevie May switched off, Lustig sneaked in behind him at the back post to head in an inviting McGregor cross for his second goal of the season.

Wilson missed another half-chance at the start of the second-half when he failed to connect properly with a May cross, his volley floating over the bar.

Moments later when, after Lewis had foiled Edouard to concede another corner, Simunovic leapt to bullet in McGregor’s delivery, his second goal of the campaign after scoring the only goal of the game last week against Kilmarnock. That was the league title effectively won.

Bain did make a save from Aberdeen defender Michael Devlin’s close-range effort with five minutes remaining before Edouard, following a Hoops break, took a Rogic pass and drilled a shot low past Lewis for a fine third goal.

Steven Gerrard is not impressed with some aspects of Scottish football

Although the Liverpool legend has enjoyed games against Aberdeen and Celtic, long-ball foot ball, empty stadiums and plastic pitches have frustrated Gerrard.

And with another Old Firm derby still to come, the former England captain wants to see a greater standard next season.

“Certain games have been good,” he said.

â€Å“Some of the ones we’ve played in or that I’ve watched have been of a higher quality than I expected.

The former England captain wants stadiums to be full capacity

â€Å“But at times, I’ve been disappointed too watching certain games.

â€Å“The stadiums haven’t been full and when it comes to the standard, the ball has been in the air a lot.

â€Å“If I’m honest, it has been a little worse than I thought. So it has been mixed.

â€Å“Our games against Celtic and Aberdeen were so enjoyable because they’ve been fierce, quick, intense.

Scott Brown lifts Celtic’s seventh consecutive league title

â€Å“That’s the level you want to see. And at times, the standard of individual players has been really top-level too.

â€Å“I suppose it’s the same in every league, some games blow you away and others disappoint.

â€Å“I’m not criticising Scottish football but when stands are empty on TV, it doesn’t look great on the eye.

â€Å“But I know it’s tough to fill them. I wouldn’t have plastic pitches but that won’t surprise anyone. I’d also be more cute and clever with the camera angles at certain stadiums.

The Old Firm games have exploded this season

The Old Firm games have exploded this season

â€Å“If they’re putting games live on BT Sport or Sky they should change the camera positions so you see a full stand rather than an empty one.

â€Å“It’s a small thing but it comes up in conversation when you are chatting to players.”

Having finished his glittering career in Los Angeles, visiting grounds such as Pittodrie will undoubtedly have been a culture shock for Gerrard.

But the proud Englishman talks passionately and proudly about Scottish football.

The Liverpool legend reached the top in 2005 by winning the Champions League

And filling the stands is exactly how Gerrard wants to start improving the standard of Scottish football.

â€Å“I want Scottish football to be as good as it can be,” Gerrard added. “I want a Scottish manager in charge of the national team and playing the right way. I want to back all of that.

“I’m employed by a Scottish club, I work with Scottish people, so I want your national team to be the best that it can be.

â€Å“That might be weird coming from an Englishman but I’m part of it now and I have a responsibility to help with that.

Gerrard has gone strutting his stuff in Los Angeles to the Pittodrie promenade

6

Gerrard has gone strutting his stuff in Los Angeles to the Pittodrie promenade

â€Å“I want the game up here to be better, to look better on the eye. And there are subtle things that can help that.

â€Å“You go live on BT Sport or Sky Sports around the world and have a camera on an empty stand.

â€Å“It’s ludicrous. I don’t get it, don’t understand it.

â€Å“We’ve played some very good games against lower teams who have made it really difficult for us and I like going to the traditional stadiums. I love it, in fact.

â€Å“But when I’m watching Sportscene, there’s nothing better than seeing a full stand, with fans enjoying themselves.

â€Å“It seems to be empty stands you see when the games are on TV.”

Eriksen has been linked with a move to Real Madrid and the attacking midfielder said it would be a ‘step up’ to join the LaLiga giants.

The Sun report that Spurs chairman Levy is ‘annoyed’ with Eriksen as the midfielder waited until he was on international duty to make his comments, meaning he was out the club’s jurisdiction.

The report also claims Tottenham are open to selling Eriksen, but only if they get the £80million asking price they’ve slapped on his head.

Eriksen has just one year left on his Tottenham contract but Levy will not let him leave unless Real Madrid meet that valuation, with no cut-price deal possible.

Madrid are understood to not want to pay £80million for Eriksen.

Spurs do run the risk of the midfielder leaving on a free transfer next summer when his contract expires if they do not sell him during this window, or get him to sign a new deal.

The north London club signed Eriksen for just £11million from Ajax in 2013 and he has gone on to be one of the top players in the Premier League.

Ashley Young: Manchester United say they will ‘take the strongest possible action’ after defender is racially abused online

Manchester United have vowed to ‘take the strongest possible action’ they can after veteran defender Ashley Young was racially abused on Twitter.

Young was targeted online as United suffered a 3-0 second-leg defeat at Barcelona in their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday night, as they crashed out of the competition by virtue of a 4-0 aggregate defeat.

2

Ashley Young was the target of vile racist abuse online after Manchester United’s defeat to Barcelona

United said the club ‘utterly condemns’ the ‘racist social media comments’, while anti-discrimination campaigners Kick It Out have called upon the social media platform to act following a series of incidents.

The club added it was “working to identify individuals involved.

In the wake of the defeat, racially abusive messages were posted on social media site Twitter from a series of anonymous accounts about England international Young, labelling him a ‘f****** n*****’ and an ‘ape c***’.

The organisation said via its own official Twitter account: “Yet another black player, this time Ashley Young, targeted with racist abuse on social media after tonight’s Champions League game.

“Again, we’re left asking @TwitterUK the same question – when will you take serious action to tackle the rampant discrimination on your platform?”

Mohamed Salah, Danny Welbeck, Raheem Sterling, Michy Batshuayi, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Moussa Sissoko have all received abuse over the same platform in recent years.

The Young incident came just days after MK Dons striker Chuks Aneke was targeted on Instagram following Saturday’s 2-1 League Two defeat at Tranmere, prompting the Merseyside club to call in police.

Concern is mounting over racism in football after a spate of attacks on players on both social media and in and around stadiums.

England’s black players were subjected to repeated chants during their Euro 2020 qualifier in Montengro last month, while Tottenham defender Danny Rose revealed recently he has ‘had enough’ and ‘can’t wait’ to quit the game.

Meanwhile, Juventus striker Moise Kean was targeted with monkey chants from the stands at Cagliari earlier this month.

Football: Klopp excited by Premier League title fight

LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insists the Premier League title race is something to get excited about rather than stressed about despite seeing his side overhauled by Manchester City in the past week.
City climbed to the top of the table on goal difference with victory against Everton in midweek but Liverpool's destiny remains in their own hands as they have a game in hand over Pep Guardiola's men, with both sides level on 62 points.
"It's getting exciting now," said Klopp on Friday (Feb 8).
"There was never a doubt that would happen. That was always clear. I don't think that anybody thought we would be top of the league with 12 points between us and another team with three games to go.
"The only chance to improve our position, even though it is a good position, is by winning football games."
Just over a week ago, Liverpool had the chance to move seven points clear at the top, but back-to-back draws with Leicester and West Ham on Monday have seen them reeled in by the champions.
Liverpool players and fans have been accused of letting nerves get to them in their desperation to end a 29-year wait to win the title.

And Klopp called on the home fans to make Anfield a cauldron when Bournemouth visit on Saturday.
"It's like shouting your soul on the pitch. That's how we say it in German," added Klopp.
"I know that with each fibre of our bodies we will be ready to fight for everything.
"The only thing I want to say after the season is we gave our everything."
There was good news for Liverpool off the field on Friday as the club announced a world-record £106 million (S$140 million) net profit last year thanks to the sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona and a run to the Champions League final.
Much of that profit has already been reinvested in the signings of Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri, and Klopp is hoping he does not need to ask for a lot more money this summer.
"We built a really strong squad and that's a squad built for the future, not only this season," added the German.
"I hope we don't need too much money in the next years to be honest because if you have the right players in, you work with them and make the best of it."
Klopp's squad has been ravaged by injury and illness in recent weeks but he could have Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum back for Bournemouth's visit after all three returned to training on Thursday.

Arsenal transfer news: Gunners reportedly preparing move for Exequiel Palacios as Real Madrid pull plug on approach

Arsenal are reportedly weighing up a move for River Plate midfielder Exequiel Palacios after his proposed transfer to Real Madrid collapsed last summer.

Palacios, 20, is very highly rated and has been included in Argentina’s final 23-man squad for this summer’s Copa America in Brazil.

And he’s expected to leave the Argentine giants after almost four years in the first team.

Palacios was being tracked by a number of European clubs including Real Madrid, who almost signed him for £20million last summer.

But an untimely injury saw Los Blancos pull the plug on the deal.

However, Argentinian radio station Radio Continental claim that Arsenal have emerged as the new favourites to land Palacios and could make an offer of their own.

It is understood Palacios’ release clause in his River contract is at £18m and he would therefore be within the Gunners’ transfer budget even if they do not qualify for the Champions League.

Palacios’ agent, Renato Corsi, also confirmed to Radio Continental that the midfielder ‘is leaving in June’ and has ‘clubs in England and Germany asking about him’.

The youngster helped River Plate win the Copa Libertadores last year.

He has been capped twice by Argentina but could add to it at the Copa America this summer.
