England fans in Porto labelled an ‘embarrassment’ as police fight with supporters ahead of Nations League semi-final

Fans responsible for causing trouble in Portugal ahead of England’s Nations League semi-final have been labelled an ‘embarrassment to the team’ by the Football Association.

There was trouble in Porto for a second consecutive night as riot police clashed with fans.

Some supporters are believed to have thrown bottles at Portugal fans who were watching their team take on Switzerland in the same area.

England fans causing trouble in Portugal have been strongly condemned by the FA

England are preparing to take on the Netherlands in their semi-final on Thursday, with commentary live on talkSPORT.

The FA issued a strong statement following the disorder.

It read: “The FA strongly condemns the scenes witnessed in Porto overnight. Anyone responsible for these disturbances cannot be seen as true England supporters and are not welcome in football.

“They are an embarrassment to the team and the thousands of well-behaved fans who follow England in the right way. We are liaising with the UK Football Policing Unit.”

Tony Cascarino says he’s come to accept football fans misbehaving abroad after violence in Porto

Deputy Chief Constable Mark Roberts, National Police Chiefs’ Council Football Policing lead said: “Earlier this evening Portuguese police deployed riot officers against a group of England fans in the Main Square area of Porto.

“It is believed the fans had been throwing bottles at Portugal fans who were watching the match in the same area.

“This is the second evening in a row where disorder has occurred in Porto.

“Last night there were issues outside a bar, where bottles were thrown and minor damage was caused. It is completely unacceptable.

“The behaviour we are witnessing is incredibly disappointing and again I would point fans towards the recent video from The FA – ‘Don’t be that idiot’.

“The behaviour of a small number of the England fans out here continues to tarnish the reputation of the genuine fans who are simply trying to enjoy the football.”

talkSPORT’s Adrian Durham and Darren Gough are in Porto ahead of the England match and have witnessed the crowd trouble first hand.

They tweeted pictures and video from the scene on Wednesday night.

Many fans could be seen goading police officers with car windows reportedly smashed, roads forced to be closed and abusive songs sung.

The worst of the incidents occurred in the large fan zone in Liberdade Square when trouble flared following Cristiano Ronaldo’s opening goal for Portugal.

The FA had warned fans ahead of the trip to Portugal and posted a campaign urging them ‘don’t be that idiot’.
