Phil Foden is on the verge of entering a crossroads in his career and could be forced to make a move away from Manchester City, believes former Citizens defender Danny Mills.
The midfielder was handed his first Premier League start for his boyhood club for Wednesday night’s victory over Cardiff.
And the 18-year-old performed well, forcing saves from Cardiff goalkeeper Neil Etheridge while also seeing a close range shot hit the post.
Foden’s previous appearances in City colours this season have been good which has seen him score in the Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
Manager Pep Guardiola even claimed Foden can be a club great for the next decade and vowed to give him more minutes next season.

However, Mills believes that if Foden doesn’t make more than ten starts next season, he may have ‘a real decision’ to make regarding his future at the Etihad Stadium.
Mills told talkSPORT 2: “He [Foden] is almost too good to go out on loan, nobody’s going to buy him for what City want for him, ie £40million or £50million because he’s unproven.
“But he’s got untold ability and I think this time next year if he’s only started maybe ten games then he’s going to have a real decision to make because it’s his boyhood club and he’s a fan.
Foden’s first league start also came on the same night where Callum Hudson-Odoi made his first Chelsea start in the Premier League.
Hudson-Odoi also acquitted himself well, providing an assist for the Blues’ first goal scored by Olivier Giroud as they dispatched Brighton 3-0 at Stamford Bridge.
It’s been a roller coaster season for Hudson-Odoi, who made his first appearances for England during their Euro 2020 qualifiers against Czech Republic and Montenegro last month.
And Mills said how Hudson-Odoi, also 18, receiving a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s squad could be a factor in Foden possibly looking to play elsewhere in the future.
Mills added:Â “He’s only 18-years-old but he’ll be looking at the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi who also made his first Premier League start last night, but he [Hudson-Odoi] is in the England side.
“And he might go to the mini-tournament [Nations League] in the summer and off the back of that he might go to the Euros.

“Foden’s going to be sat there thinking ‘you know what, I’m as good as that, I’m even better than that, I want a piece of that action’.
“But to get it, he might have to force a move on loan or on a permanent basis but that’s probably another twelve months down the line.”
