Jamie Carragher insists England should continue to play out from the back after John Stones and Ross Barkley made calamitous mistakes in the 3-1 defeat to the Netherlands.
The Three Lions went crashing out of the Nations League after conceding two disastrous goals in extra-time.
Stones inexplicably dawdled on the ball before Barkley horribly misplaced a pass in his own box.
The Dutch profited from both errors, with Kyle Walker inadvertently turning into his own net and Quincy Promes scoring, and questions have been raised against Gareth Southgate’s possession-at-all-costs philosophy.

But Carragher was quick to highlight that both goals were the result of individual errors, rather than a problem with the system.
He told Sky Sports: “The goals never came from risks, or playing out from the back, they came from stupid decisions.
“Do we just want Harry Maguire to lump it there?
“That [the error] is stupid. He’s made a stupid mistake and a stupid decision.
“That’s nothing to do with playing out from the back. Pass it to your goalkeeper and make another angle.
“As a centre back, you play what’s on. You’re taught from a very young age, play the way you’re facing.

“When you’re facing your goalkeeper and there’s nothing on, you start again.
“It’s not about playing or playing wrong. Forget this talk about playing out from the back [being wrong].”
Marcus Rashford had put England in front from the penalty spot following a clumsy challenge from Matthijs de Ligt, before the highly-rated Dutchman atoned for his error with a bullet header in the second-half.
The Three Lions thought they had won it when Jesse Lingard slotted home in the latter stages of normal time, but replays showed he was a whisker offside and the goal was chalked off by VAR.
The defeat will feel all too familiar for England fans, who will remember their side taking the lead against Croatia before losing the 2018 World Cup semi-final after extra-time.
Gareth Southagte’s men will now face Switzerland in a battle for third place on Sunday, while the Netherlands and Portugal compete to become the first ever Nations League champions.
