Ally McCoist has branded Scotland’s 3-0 defeat to Kazakhstan as ‘the poorest result’ in the nation’s football history.
Just as you thought things couldn’t get any worse for Alex McLeish, it did. The hapless manager could only watch in horror as his side suffered absolute humiliation against a team ranked 117 in the world.
The Scots had travelled to Astana surely confident of opening their Euro 2020 qualification campaign with a victory. Instead, they found themselves 2-0 down inside ten minutes.
That was embarrassing enough, but the third goal scored shortly after the break had fans in shocked disbelief.
And then there was this Tweet sent out from the official Scotland account…
Before Thursday’s game, Kazakhstan had only recorded four competitive wins in TEN YEARS. Those scalps? Andorra, Latvia, Faroe Islands and Azerbaijan.
Cue Friday morning’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show, as the talkSPORT host was joined by fellow former Scotland international Ally McCoist.
‘McLeish should never have got the job,’ says Craig Burley in passionate Scotland rant
And it’s fair to say the mood was considerably lower than usual…
Reflecting on Thursday’s result, Rangers legend McCoist said: “In all seriousness… dear me. Is that as bad as it gets?
“I can’t remember as poor a result as that.
“We spoke about it yesterday [he and Alan] and we thought we would beat them.
“I wouldn’t say we thought it was a certainty, but we thought we would beat Kazakhstan. The team we put out should have been good enough.
“We are struggling like you have no idea. Big time.
“That’s as poor a result as any in our history.â€
