Adam Johnson: Former Sunderland and Manchester City forward issues apology following release from prison

Former Sunderland and Manchester City forward Adam Johnson has expressed his ‘deep regret’ for the child sex offences that led to him being imprisoned for three years.


Johnson was released from prison last month after serving half of a six-year sentence for engaging in sexual activity with a 15-year-old fan.

The 31-year-old, who also played 12 times for England, admitted two charges relating to kissing the girl and meeting her with intent to groom her.


He was also convicted by a jury for a further offence of sexual activity after meeting her in his car – a conviction he appealed but failed to overturn.

In a statement, the former winger apologised for his actions and expressed his desire to move on with his life.


He said: â€Å“I am very sorry for the effect my conduct had on those directly and indirectly involved. It should never have happened and I deeply regret what I did.


â€Å“I now want to concentrate on the future and want to demonstrate through my actions that I am committed to repaying them for their support.”
