Kieran Tierney: 10 things you didn’t know about the Celtic and Scotland star ‘good enough to play for Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United’

As each season passes, Kieran Tierney’s reputation continues to rise.

The left-back has played a crucial role in Celtic’s last three Scottish Premiership title wins.

Tierney’s impressive performances since making his Hoops debut in 2014 has seen him linked with moves to Arsenal, Everton and Borussia Dortmund.

He is set to feature in Scotland’s Euro 2020 qualifiers against Kazakhstan and San Marino on Thursday and Sunday, respectively, with both games live on talkSPORT 2.

Here are ten things you didn’t know about one of Europe’s hottest prospects…

1. He broke his jaw in Celtic’s Scottish Cup final win over Aberdeen in 2017

Blood poured from Tierney’s mouth after being hit in the face by Aberdeen’s Jayden Stockley. The striker’s swinging arm forced the defender off in the 27th minute.

Celtic went on to win the game 2-1 thanks to Tom Rogic’s injury-time goal and Tierney made himself even more of a fans’ favourite by tweeting a picture with the trophy saying “worth a broken jaw haha”.

2. He has captained Celtic in Europe

In the absence of club captain Scott Brown, then-Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers handed the captaincy over to the 21-year-old last October.

Celtic fell to a 3-1 defeat at RB Salzburg, but it will be a night that lives long in Tierney’s memory.

He said: “I’ve worked hard my entire life for moments like that. Walking out the tunnel and going into the huddle is something I’ve dreamed for as long as I can remember. That’s when you see your hard work paying off and making it all worth it.”

3. His love for Celtic runs through the family

Tierney has been in Celtic’s academy since the age of seven and his family are season ticket holders at Celtic Park.

4. He has been tipped to play for one of the Premier League’s top clubs

In 2017, Scotland midfielder Charlie Adam backed Tierney to thrive in England. He said: “Tierney is Scotland’s best player now – he is different to anything else we have got. He is the next one who could go to a Premier League club and play regularly. He could play for a Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal or Manchester United without a doubt.”

5. He can score screamers

Playing for Celtic’s Under-21 side, Tierney scored from the edge of his own penalty box in a 3-1 win over Hearts in 2014. The video, posted on Celtic’s official YouTube channel, received over 150,000 views.

6. He was not born in Scotland

Despite pledging his international allegiance to Scotland, Tierney was not born north of the border. He was born in the Isle of Man and moved to Wishaw in north Lanarkshire, Scotland when he was an infant.

7. He was just 18 years old when he received his first Scotland call-up

In Tierney’s breakthrough season with Celtic, his form was rewarded with a call-up to the Scotland senior team in March 2016. In that same month, he played the first-half of Scotland’s 1-0 win over Denmark.

8. He started out as a winger

Celtic academy coach Martin Miller insisted Tierney would never be a left-back. He said: “He was playing seven-a-side football at the time and he was very much an out and out winger, he was never a defender at all.”

9. He is versatile in defence

Tierney has played as a left-sided centre-half in a back-five for Celtic and Scotland in the past. He impressed in that role in Scotland’s 2-2 draw with England in a World Cup qualifier in 2017.

10. He was a ball boy in Celtic’s memorable Champions League night

Tierney performed the duties at Celtic Park as his boyhood club shocked the world by beating Barcelona 2-1 in November 2012.

Goals from Victor Wanyama and Tony Watt sealed an unforgettable win against the European giants.
