Jose Mourinho has launched a passionate defence of Mauricio Pochettino after Tottenham’s Champions League final defeat to Liverpool.
Spurs failed to shine on the biggest night in their history as goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi sealed a 2-0 victory for the Reds in Madrid.
The crushing loss leaves Pochettino without a trophy to show for his five years at Tottenham, or indeed his entire managerial career.
But Mourinho, working as a pundit alongside former adversary Arsene Wenger, insists Spurs fans should be proud of their manager.
“That’s the drama of football and sometimes it’s not fair. Mauricio has had four very good years at Spurs, brings them to the final for the Champions League, and he’s still waiting for the first trophy of his career,” the former Manchester United boss told beIN Sports.

“I feel very sorry for Mauricio but I think the English supporter is very loyal and they know when people give everything. They are a bit different than in other countries when everything is just about winning.
“I think the Tottenham fans are proud of their team. They still look to this team and this manager as a historical team for them.
“They will feel some love at home and next season when they go back to business, they will go with the pride of what they did and not in a low.”
Pochettino kept his head held high after the defeat – and refused to criticise his players.
“Of course I think we need to feel very proud about the effort, how we fight, for the ride to this final. We were very unlucky, you see the goal from the penalty,” he told BT Sport.
“We played so well in the second half. It’s not easy to play against a team that has played consistently very well, taking risks, I feel so proud.
“A little bit unlucky, to start a Champions League final from the start 1-0 it’s a tough situation, it changed completely the plan.
“I think we tried. We feel very proud of these players and the fans. It’s about being optimistic for the future.
“It’s about learning, to live the experience. I’m so happy to manage this group of players and congratulations to Liverpool because they had a fantastic season.”
Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp ended his Champions League final curse and delivered his first piece of silverware as Liverpool manager.
And Mourinho could not be happier for his former Premier League rival.
He added: “A manager who reached three Champions League finals, it’s hard to lose one, must be very, very hard to lose two and today I think it’s a phenomenal day of his life, of his career.
“As a colleague, I’m very happy with it.”
